In the city of São Paulo, we follow people from different worlds who inhabit the same street, in the forgotten center of the metropolis, where life pulsates latently and rebuilds itself every day.
An ever changing street, Rua Aurora has been home to high quality fabric stores, bars and restaurants frequented by famous artists and musicians, turned itself into a neighborhood populated by independent cinemas and movie theaters until it became home of several homeless residents. Since 2012, these residents have emptied the properties which have been occupied by crack users. The old buildings, deteriorated by time, have become homes for foreigners and migrants who have become accustomed to living with prostitution and crime. Aurora Street - Refuge of All Worlds draws a contemporary portrait of the relationship between people who work and live on Aurora Street and find there a space for sharing dreams, ideas and the struggle for survival amid the chaos of crime and drug trafficking.
In 1825, Rua Santo Elesbão was renamed Rua Aurora. During the ‘40/’50s, the area was home to fabric stores frequented by a wealthy clientele and several bars and restaurants arrived in the area. In the following years Aurora Street was home to several movie theaters managed by important studios, such as Paramount, and the area became known as Boca do Lixo. In the last twenty years, the atmosphere of the street has undergone a profound change. The old houses of neoclassical architecture have turned into tenements occupied by homeless residents, foreigners and migrants and occupied by crack users.The intention of the film is to capture the feeling of this place through its actors. What did they leave behind? What makes this street a better place to live than their places of origin? It is thought-provoking to think about what motivates them to have chosen a place of belonging like Aurora Street, which was once the cradle of bohemia, the setting for Boca do Lixo films, and today is known for prostitution and drug trafficking.
